The Sketchbook Project

Over the past few months, I have been working on a sketchbook for The Sketchbook Project. This is a project created by the Art House Co-op in Brooklyn NY. You select a theme, they give you a sketchbook and you fill it and mail it back.The book then goes on a world tour before being placed in the Brooklyn Art Library.

I have just completed a new set of paintings. The following images include some new area such as Nashua (my hometown) and Newmarket (my new hometown). There are also some Portsmouth and Exeter neighborhoods in these pieces as well.

All of these paintings and a couple more (if I finish them in time) will be part of Nahcotta Gallery's ETA 10 (Enormous Tiny Art). The show will be up in September with an opening reception on Friday, Sept. 5th.

Spotlight is an arts and culture magazine based in Portsmouth NH.

I have recently been a bit busy and instead of working on my paintings of houses, I have been working on painting my house. Well, more than just painting it. Since purchasing our new home in December, my fiance and I have taken on the huge task of complete home renovation.

A close friend of mine has recently opened a gallery in downtown Dover, New Hampshire. The gallery is called Lucy's Art Emporium (www.lucysartemporium.com).

This gallery showcases fine art, retro home accessories, and hand-crafted items made by local artists.

I took a little break from painitng and started playing with printmaking again. I cut a group of key stamps from rubber to create the prints below. The key stamps are all actual size so some of the prints I have made are pretty small.

Most of the keys are from old apartments, houses, cars, locks, etc. Many of the keys I have long since forgetten where they go but I just couldn't throw them away.

Art Festival in Dover

May 9th is going to be a very busy day! I will be participating in two art auctions and one art festival.

The Art Festival will take place in downtown Dover, New Hampshire at One Washington Center.

I will be selling small paintings, prints, handmade books, and jewelry made from recycled materials.

This is the second year that this event will take place. Last year's festival was a lot of fun for everyone involved. There were many artists selling their original pieces, dancing, music, food, and fun events for kids to get involved in.

Habitat for Humanity Auction

I have donated a painting to the Habitat for Humanity's auction, "Home is Where the Art is". I thought it was pretty appropriate for me to participate in the auction since they are trying to raise money to build houses and I paint houses!

This auction is on May 9th and takes place in downtown Portsmouth.

Montserrat Art Auction

I will be participating once again in Montserrat's "Artrageous!23 Auction" this year.

This is an art auction that raises financial aid money for students who attend Montserrat College of Art. This is an annual event and it is always a blast. There are some pretty amazing artists who participate each year.

this past summer i moved back to new hampshire. after setting up my studio i jumped right into working on a very large painting for a family living on the new hampshire seacoast. this commissioned piece is about 4 feet tall and over 3 feet wide. i began working on it in july and completed in the painting in november.

Graduate thesis show and painting process

the paintings below were done as part of my graduate thesis. in a nut shell, i used my art making process as a basis of my research to understand more about the artist / art teacher identity. during the months i spent researching, i documented my painting process and i have included the images below.

"Masters of Art in Teaching Art Capstone Exhibition" - a fancy way of saying my thesis show.

the image above is from the show we had at the Winfisky Gallery at Salem State College. the show was this past may and in the image you can see two of my paintings and a framed monoprint.

this is my finished painting. below are the steps that show part of my process. i worked on the painting over the course of a few months.

step 1: layout images and glue them to the panels

step 2: paint an underpainting... i just really like orange as an underpainting

step 3: paint - i block in the big colors. most of these colors get painted over right away

step 4: paint more

steps 5-10: just keep painting. i usually paint over everything a few times. often i glue new images over areas that are not working or just paint over entire spaces entirely.

this was another painting that i did as part of my thesis. i was encouraged to make a piece that expressed some of the challenges i faced in dealing with artist / art teacher identity. in this piece i incorporated some school curriculum maps, teacher assessment procedures, student assessment procedures, and my class schedule... all of the things that felt at odds with my artist self... and tried to recreate them into something more me.

these are all monoprints that i have recently made. i studied printmaking in college and it was actually my major. after graduating, i began focusing more on collage and painting since i did not have access to a press or other print-making equipment. but we now have a small print press in our studio which i am excited about.

the following drawings were done in my graduate drawing class. it was great working with drawing materials again since i have recently been so focused on working with acrylics.

houses #1 (18x44 inches)

i decided to experiment with my houses subject in a drawing medium. there are still layers of collage incorporated into these pieces. i also used charcoal, graphite, chalk pastels, and gesso.

this is a drawing experiment created in my classes. it is charcoal on paper and measures about

18 x 24 inches.

these two drawings were also complete in my graduate drawing course. i chose the hinges as a subject because i enjoyed their overlapping shapes. it was later pointed out to me how these hinges looked like my houses... funny how the houses keep coming back into my work.
